Believe it or not, the cold and dreary days of winter are behind us. It’s just about time to turn off the heat for good. As you begin tackling your spring cleaning, make sure you add these HVAC items to your to-do list.

Change the filter.

Start of the new season with a new air filter. All throughout winter, your air filter is hard at work collecting all the dust and dirt in your home so that it doesn’t circulate in your air. By the time winter is over, the filter is probably filthy! Not only that, but it’s clogged with debris which makes it harder for air to pass through. This means that your equipment has to use more energy to push the air through. Before you switch on the air conditioner, do your system a favor and replace the air filter.

Check the ductwork.

The end of winter is the best time to inspect your air ducts to ensure you’re getting the most out of your HVAC system in the spring. If there is a clog in the ductwork, your system will have to work that much harder to circulate the air. You could also greatly improve the indoor air quality by getting rid of dirt buildup. While you’re at it, vacuum your vents and make sure they aren’t blocked by curtains, furniture, or rugs.

Set the thermostat.

Instead of running your A/C at the same temperature all day long, enhance your energy efficiency by programming your thermostat. Consider raising the setpoint during the time that you’re sleeping or while you’re not at home. It’s also a good idea to check the battery in your thermostat. A weak battery can cause inconsistent temperatures.

Clean the A/C unit.

Extend the life of your air conditioner by giving it a thorough cleaning this spring. The most important step is to clean the outdoor air conditioner condenser coil. As the fan in the unit runs, it can pull in dirt, leaves, grass, and other debris. Clear any blockage away from the fan and the coil. It’s also good to check for damaged pipe insulation and replace that as needed.

The easiest way to get started on this list is to call Allied Air Conditioning and Heating. With an HVAC maintenance appointment, we’ll perform a thorough check of all these things and more so that your unit is safe and ready to keep you cool from spring into summer.
